It’s been five years since a mob of rabid, brainwashed hooligans smashed through the windows of the Capitol and tried to end American democracy.
Half a decade. And it still feels like we’re standing in the middle of the insurrection. Because we are. It’s just a slower one now — a coup that moves at the speed of paperwork instead of pipe bombs.
There’s been no accountability for the mob, of course. The men who smeared feces on the walls of the people’s house, who ripped down American flags, who beat cops nearly to death — they got pardons. They went home to their communities and picked right back up, racking up new arrests and new charges too fast to count.
And most of the lawmakers who spewed the lies — the “Chinese interference,” the “Venezuelan voting machines” — they’re still sitting in their cushy Washington offices. Some of them, as I’m about to explain, are about to get promoted.
I’ve spent a lot of the last five years being told the same thing: move on. It was one day.
That’s a lie. The mob’s plan didn’t end when everyone went home. And this week gave us the proof — again.
Arizona just nominated the coup.
On July 21st, Arizona Republicans picked Andy Biggs to be their next governor. Not despite his record on January 6th. Because of it.
He didn’t squeak by. He crushed his opponent — 70 points to 17. Trump endorsed him personally. And now he’s inches away from running the state where the fake electors scheme was hatched.
So let me back up. Who is Andy Biggs?
On the morning of January 6th, 2021 — moments before the Capitol was breached, before I was getting crushed and beaten by lunatics — Andy Biggs was on the phone with Rusty Bowers, the Republican Speaker of the Arizona House. Biggs asked him to help decertify Arizona’s own electors. To throw out the votes of every single one of his constituents.
Bowers, to his credit, said no. And then he said it again — under oath, to Congress.
Later, according to testimony from White House aides, Biggs was part of a group of House Republicans who went hunting for a blanket pardon from Trump before he left office.
You don’t go looking for a pardon for something you believe was perfectly legal.
So while I and other men and women in blue were fighting for our lives on those steps, Biggs was working to end the American experiment from the inside. And honestly? We shouldn’t be shocked. Just listen to how the guy talks about Donald Trump. He glazes him like a Dunkin’ donut.
The man is a creep. But here’s the part that should actually keep you up at night: the person who tried to throw out Arizona’s electors is now a stone’s throw from controlling Arizona’s actual election machinery.
If Democrats lose this race, we might as well stop pretending Arizona is a purple state.
“Democracy is on the ballot” — and I know you’re sick of hearing it.
That phrase has been said so many times it’s turned into white noise. I get it. People are tired of it.
So forget the slogan. Just look at the facts sitting right in front of you: a man who personally pressured a state Speaker to throw out legitimate electors, who then went looking for a pardon for it, is now his party’s nominee for governor of that same state — backed by the same president he tried to keep in power illegitimately.
You don’t need a slogan for that. You just need to be paying attention.
And it isn’t just Biggs. It isn’t just Arizona.
The people who tried to overturn 2020 are running for office everywhere.
Tommy Tuberville — a senator who objected to certifying the 2020 results — ran for governor of Alabama. Marsha Blackburn, another certification objector, ran for governor of Tennessee. And in Georgia — Georgia, the state Trump personally leaned on to “find” votes — a state rep who spent years pushing election “irregularities” claims ran for the one job that actually controls how Georgia runs its elections: Secretary of State.
Watchdog groups tracking this count more than fifty of these candidates on ballots across nearly half the country this year.
Fifty.
Maybe it’s hyperbole to call this a slow-moving coup. But you tell me what else to call it. The people who worked to end America as we know it are getting promoted — and a lot of the time, promoted into jobs that hand them direct control over future elections.
It’s insane.
So here’s what I’m asking you to do.
Don’t let this become background noise. Don’t let a headline like “election denier wins primary” turn into one of those things you thumb past on your phone because you’ve seen a version of it a dozen times.
Learn these people’s names.
Watch their races.
Because in November, some of them are going to be handed real power — and by then it’s too late to say you didn’t see it coming.
