The Party of “States’ Rights” Wants to Nationalize Your Vote

Donald Trump has now repeatedly said that the federal government should “get involved” in elections—and that Republicans should “take over” voting in multiple states.

For decades, Republicans wrapped themselves in one phrase whenever civil rights, voting rights, or federal oversight came up: states’ rights.

It was their all-purpose shield.

Washington shouldn’t interfere.

The federal government should stay out.

Local control is sacred.

Now that same party is openly floating the idea of nationalizing elections.
